Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin and blood and is an important component of every cell in the body. It builds and repairs tissue and makes enzymes, hormones and other chemicals. So on a scale of 1 to 10 its right up there in top spot – without protein our bodies would not be able to function properly.
When we eat protein based foods, the body breaks it down into amino acids (now we’re reminding you of your biology classes!). Of the 22 amino acids produced, these are divided into two categories, essential and non-essential. The body being the wonderful machine that it is can make some of these essential acids without any help, but certain amino acids must come from eating foods containing protein.
Together with carbohydrates and fat, protein is a macronutrient which means that the body needs relatively large amounts of it to provide energy for our bodies and helps fight off illness and disease and keep our important immune system in top notch condition. Protein is not stored in the body so it is important to eat healthy protein every day.
